NIF Assistance
Support preparing and coordinating your Portuguese tax identification number request.
Fees
Quoted after a consultation
NIF Assistance is scoped work. What it costs depends on your circumstances, how many applicants are involved, and how much preparation already exists — so we look at your case first and then quote it, rather than publishing a number that would be a guess for most people reading it.
Government, embassy, visa application centre, insurance, biometric, bank and other third-party charges are set and collected by those organisations and are always separate from Vizabolt’s professional fee. We confirm the scope and the fee in writing before any work begins — there is no online checkout, and nothing is charged from this website.
For anyone applying for Portuguese residency, opening a bank account, or entering into contracts in Portugal.
A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's tax identification number, commonly needed before you can open a bank account, sign a rental or purchase agreement, or complete many residency-related steps. We help you prepare and coordinate the request — the NIF itself is issued by the Portuguese tax authority, not by Vizabolt.

Requesting a NIF from the UAE
This is the one service on this page that genuinely can be arranged before you move, and it is usually the first thing a Portugal plan needs — because a bank account, a lease and most residency paperwork all ask for the number before anything else can proceed.
The reason it needs help from here is specific rather than general. A non-resident applying from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland must appoint a fiscal representative resident in Portugal, and the UAE is a third country for this purpose, as are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. That representation arrangement is the part clients cannot straightforwardly put in place themselves from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and it is most of what our fee covers.
Once you hold Portuguese residence, your position changes and the representative requirement no longer applies in the same way. That is worth knowing before you pay anyone for an arrangement you may shortly not need.
Important considerations
- A NIF does not by itself grant residency or any particular tax status.
- Requirements vary depending on whether you are a resident or non-resident.
- Government and third-party fees are separate from our service fees unless clearly stated.
- Rules and processes are set by the Portuguese tax authority and can change.
NIF FAQ.
No. A NIF is simply a tax identification number — it doesn't by itself grant residency, tax residency, or any other status.
A NIF is commonly needed early in the process, since it's often required for banking and other supporting steps — we'll confirm the right sequence for your case.
In many cases, yes, often through a fiscal representative — we can guide you through what applies to your situation.
Portuguese banks typically require a NIF before opening an account — see our bank account support page for more detail.
No. gov.pt states that obtaining a NIF is free. Our fee is a professional service fee for preparing and coordinating the request on your behalf, including the representation arrangement where one is required. It is not a government charge, and there is no government charge to pass on. We quote it after a consultation and confirm it in writing before starting.
If you are requesting a NIF as a non-resident from outside the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, yes — a fiscal representative resident in Portugal is required. That applies to UAE and other GCC residents. Once you hold Portuguese residence the requirement no longer applies in the same way.
It identifies you to the Portuguese tax authority, and it is the number Portuguese systems ask for: employment, opening a bank account, signing a lease or purchase agreement, and tax filings. It is an identifier, not a permission.
